We use the Foxboro/Honeywell tag name as the PI tag, unless it is a controller, CALC block with more than one output, or an Application Object, like a DMC point. In those cases, we put a period at the end of the tag name and then some kind of extension. For controllers we use PV, SP, OP, and MA (our PI administrator preferred the Honeywell nomenclature); for CALC blocks we use RO0x, BO0x, or II0x; and for Application Objects we use the name of the parameter we're historizing, like DEP for a DMC dependent variable. Just loops numbers or combination loop# and area # or something better ? What works best from end user perspective ?
