Okay I just did some experimenting and here's what I discovered. If I
insert hypersonic 2 as an effect onto an audio track, then assign a
midi track to it that way, I can control its volume with no problems.
However, I'm inserting the dr008, another soft synth, via the alt i
menu, and that's when the volume function doesn't work.

Another possibility is that a snapshot, or some other kind of automation, is
locking it too. Try selecting the whole track and deleting only the track
automation.
