The thing is, access to a 64 bit operating system will allow for
spectacularly fast operation and a much larger number of simultaneous
soft synths and effects. It's the sort of thing you would want were it
available. These are not trivial improvements.

But in my case, the hardware is no longer made. The company went out of
business. Do I have to replace an otherwise functioning expensive piece
of gear because the company that built it is no longer around to devise
a driver for it? I suppose I'm trying to say that the specific piece of
hardware is no longer specifically viable. Had not a couple of German
guys written a driver literally before turning out the lights, I would
have been screwed three years ago. There was no plug and play
compatibility in the XP operating system to cover this then. Why should
there be such backward compatibility in Vista now? I'd be thrilled to
see it. I just don't think it will happen and some of us will have to
literally pay the price for that. K.

There's simply no way that microsoft will build an OS that isn't
backwards compatible. If they did then millions of users would be left
in the lurch and probably running for the Mackintosh hills. The worst
case will be that you need to install some new drivers for the old gear,
just as Sandy said.

If the hardware is still viable, I expect the
manufacturers to develop Vista drivers for
them. We probably won't be using Vista for a
while, though. Sonar 6 probably won't be compatible until next fall.
