Cameron,

Is there a PCMCIA port or a PC Express port on the Mac? If so, why don't you just get a FireWire card that utilizes the T I chip set? There are several out there, so I'm sure you should be able to do that much more readily then having a modification done to the main system board of the Mac.

Hi. Yes, all the forums I've been reading, including apple forums, have
said that the texas instruments chips work great and the new ones are
garbage for audio work. I want to find out if I can get the older chip
installed. Not sure if that is possible but if it is, I'd be willing to pay
for it. I really want to get this working but as it is my only machine
right now, I don't want to have to go through and disable a bunch of things
in the device manager and have to use my headset for speech every time I
want to work in sonar. The old mac book pro is going pretty cheap now and
that does not have this issue from what I've read. However, this machine is
pretty much brand new and I know I'd take a financial beating selling her
just to buy a second hand refurb mac book pro.

How frustrating. I really like this machine, besides this point.

I want to see if the new I macs coming out, or the ones currently for sale,
also have this issue. My dell may be on the way out and I don't know if I
want to get another desktop pc. If this firewire issue was not well, an
issue, I'd be prepared to go mac all the way but because this is such a
wrench in the works right now, I am really on the fence.

Cameron.

Hmm... I don't know. It's an older machine and, well, I have no idea,
really, whether there are issues with particular MacBook FireWire ports. Of
course, Kevin says there is and I trust he's heard that from some reliable
source.

Cheers

Hi. Interesting. Does the powerbook have a better firewire chip though?

That seems to be the issue with this model and all the other lower end mac
books until you get to the pro models.

I did ask the sweetwater tech support guy if issues had been reported with
other mac books and various firewire interfaces and I didn't get a clear
answer...

Thanks,

Cameron.

Cameron,

I just did 32 tracks through one FireWire 400 port while recording an
orchestra. Actually, I even tested it at 96K and it worked without a hitch on an older PowerBook G4. You should have absolutely no problem with it in
terms of bandwidth.

Hi. Well, I have my desktop keyboard hooked up to one of the USB ports
and
the external drive hooked up to the other one. Would I be able to plug
the
external into the second firewire port on the tascam or is that going to
tax
the one firewire port too much?

Thanks,

Cameron.

Hey man. Oddly enough, the problem only seems to exist on firewire audio
devices. Here's something to try. If you've got any kind of generic USB
sound card such as a headset or iMic or creative or something like that,
plug that in and make that your default audio device in the windows sound
control panel. That way, the sigmatell card won't be used. Disable
networking, and you should be up and running with no problems. I'll give
this a try tomorrow and let you know how it goes.
