I think I've got it under control ? The app that Terry sent would lock up the
machine with a cryptic error msg and all kinds of other aberrations and the
msg included something about illegal files, urls and chars ??? had to C-A-D to
get out. After several attempts I came to the conclusion that it wouldn't work
with lnk files. And, I was trying to load 2900 files which didn't help !
I tried RenameMaster that I've had on here for months and again the lockup. I
left the damned thing sitting here and went to find some groceries. When I
came back it was displaying an error msg about illegal url assignment or
something and gave me the option to ignore the errors and continue...... so I
continued. Eventually the screen filled with file names and some of the files
had
been renamed to something about the illegal url ??? That was the reason it
hung... bad files or bad filenames.
It had renamed the files but had removed too many characters. The two apps
use a different counting system.
Anyway, I copied a list of the files out of IE Favs since that is a system
folder and may be part of the problem and now I'm going to give it a shot with
only 300 or 400 files instead of 2900.
Another shot at it may produce better results.
