I turn off the computer completely. Everything is plugged into a Power
strip for each machine except the power for the DSL modem. The modem
power is always on along with the router.
When I get up in the morning I flip the power on for each power strip so
the monitors and motherboards can warm up. I put the coffee pot on while
things are warming up and then when the coffee is about ready I power up
each machine so when I get some coffee the machines are booted.
They remain on all day without shutting down the drives, monitors or
anything else and then off again at bedtime.
I use to leave my machine on all the time but when Gov. Grey Davis
started getting cozy with Enron and my bill went up to $240 a month I
made some big changes.
These new florescent light bulbs are gonna help too. A hundred watt
incandescent puts out the same light as a 23 watt florescent..........
less than 25% of the power.
In the hardware stores the new bulbs are expensive so your payback is
longer but I got some bulbs @2 for 99 cents at one of my favorite
stores.
My next door neighbor is a maintenance man at one of the wineries in
Napa Valley and they are spending big bucks to make the change but are
hoping to cut electricity costs by 60%. I'll get some idea on my savings
in the next month or so.
YMMV
