[bookshare-discuss] Re: More books than I know what to do with!

This is honestly a matter of opinion.
I prefer a human reader to a computer any day, and cannot understand why some feel the tape structure is flawed.

I can sit by the ocean and read in comfort and with the kind of vocal seasoning only a human ca produce. I think the suggestion that a book produced today could likewise be available today. Still my point is that each individual has personal tastes. Both services have their place, and I trust both will remain for those who want to savor them.

I agree -- NLS was the best show in town for many years, and still produces
a superior product. Their recordings are great, but the medium of tape is
flawed, and there is no way to get around that.

I think NLS has since the 90s done a much better job of expanding their
collection in a rounded way -- I was often surprised by some of the titles
that would appear, and often with relative alacrity.

But there is no question that no one can beat a service like book, where a
book that came out today, can, with a little effort, be available within
days -- even the same day in some extraordinary cases like Harry Potter.

I don't want to dis the NLS system. I certainly had my share of
frustrations, and bookshare has opened up a whole new world. I can always
get a book when I want. There's no waiting for the library to send what I
have requested and there are books here the library never thought of
doing,
but let's give credit. For decades it was my only source, and gave me
hours
and hours, probably too many, of good listening.
I usually get things I request, but then I believe in overflowing the
cart;
so they have lots to choose from. I think some libraries are better about
filling requests than others, but with bookshare, we don't need to worry.

I think the subject pretty well sums it up. Yes, Kasondra, I agree with
you.
I'm 27, and I already have so much that I'll probably never get around
to
reading it all, and that's particularly hopeless since I keep getting
more!
<smile> It's a good kind of hopeless, though. <smile> Thinking back, I
can't
imagine how I got along before Bookshare. I know it wasn't fun, for
sure!
I
always had problems with my regional libraries of NLS. I never got what
I
wanted, no matter how many requests I sent in, I never got enough and
there
was always a lot of downtime between the time I sent books back and the
time
I got more...and the list could continue. Bookshare has changed all that
for
me. Take care.

Cindy,

That list you have would be very interesting. I am only thirty, and I
don't
know if I will ever be able to read all the books that I would like to.
I
hear about new ones every day. This morning I heard of a new one by Art
Buchwald, called Too Soon to Say Good-bye. That would be a good one to
add
to the collection. There's always new books, and bookshare has made it
easier for us to get a hold of so much wonderful reading material. We
just
didn't used to have this kind of access a few years ago.
