Just remember pine tends to blotch if you get fancy.  You can seal it with 
shellac and then use a gel stain, but that will cover up the natural grain of 
the wood.

Thanks for that info.  I was thinking that I might try tung oil, but from what 
you say, maybe I can use what ever is left in a can of finish.

I've read that treating the ends of logs with paint is only a mild retardant to 
moisture transfer and that the transfer occurs even when the ends are painted.
