Scansoft likes to add spaces, but if you aren't using it there probably isn't 
anything else you can change to improve the spaces in words problem.

Always use alt-E to get out of ranked spelling when you want to fix a word 
manually.  After fixing press escape to get back in to ranked spelling.  If you 
hit escape to get out of ranked spelling to fix something you will lose 
changes.  When you have fixed some stuff use apply, and when finished use OK. 
Then remember to save the file, but I know you already knew that. :-)
