Hi Mary Anne:
I agree, I would like to see hyphenated words and page headings eliminated, it would make reading so much smoother.
Thanks,

Hi Mayrie and everybody. As a very new validator, I can only say that
my experience has been that my books have contained various fonts and styles after I scan and move them to word. Things go better if I change the book's
font to something like Arial or Times 12. I also need to change the style
to normal as it's usually something strange which throws pages off. Then I
change the paper size to letter and margins usually to 1 inch for all 4.
That way, the pages seem to work out better and the short lines of book size
pages become longer and easier to read. Reading is much easier with the 8
inch lines as opposed to 4 inches. I had a book which was set up in columns with 2 columns per print page. I found that very cumbersome. By spreading the book page out as noted, I got rid of the columns which were only giving
me about 5 words per line which was driving me crazy. I would never have
been able to validate the book that way.

Another thing I do is get rid of hyphenated words at end of lines or bottom of pages. I can't imagine listening to a book with hyphenated words which I
would find very distracting. So I just joint the word. A little editing
liberty but I figure it provides better reading all around.. I also
wouldn't like hearing headings on every page either. But I can understand
how some purists might be upset with these liberties but to me having page
headings and broken up words would take a lot from the reading pleasure.. I
don't know where the happy medium is between being a purist and having a
book that is readable while listening. The only answer I could imagine
would be having the book available in both configurations, with all headings and hyphen nonsense in there, and then another file available in a listening
format. But then that would be a nightmare. I don't think you can have a
book both ways at once. Just my observations in my early stages of book
validating.
