Hello Ms Linares! My email is sloanhenry@xxxxxxxxx
I am a disability advocate and have loved and mentored twin girls through the
challenges of school. I have one twin at Kutztown and one recent grad from
Kutztown. Their journey has been amazing and inspiring. Although they have
many successes, they continue to need support and face daily challenges in
language, expressive and receptive and communication in general. Through the
years, I have helped many with IEP's and advocacy for services in public
education, social service agencies and state and federal disability benefit
determination/coordination. I have an interest in participating more with
Wrightslaw and supporting transition to college, post-secondary opportunities.
I have recently been asked to join the Board of Directors of the PA chapter of
Learning Disabilities Association of America. Additionally, I have
participated in local Disability Empowerment seminars and OVR initiatives. I
am a nurse case manager and have successfully coordinated and facilitated
favorable outcomes in healthcare. I have been 'retired' since 2005 as I have
pursued personal interests.
I want to become an active volunteer with Bookshare. It seems like a wonderful
organization, but quite frankly, I need guidance. I have no idea where to
begin....please let me know how to join in and eagerly support your goals and
mission. I have been approved to be a volunteer and would like to offer some
time and effort. I look forward to your response and direction.
Regards,
Patricia Henry

  Hi all,

I’m perfectly fine with the way things have been handled. My previous email
was just in response to the phone discussions where people wanted to greet new
volunteers who weren’t comfortable posting to the list to introduce themselves.
If no one is interested in this idea anymore, that is fine too and the
greetings can just continue as they have been going.

  Best,

  Madeleine

  Hi Cindy,

When I posted to Madeleine, you were one of the folks I had in mind. We
just do it anyway so why not just keep doing it?

Well, I know that I and quite a few others do post a welcome to newcomers who
introduce themselves on the list. If you think it's desirable to post a welcome
to anyone anyone who has joined but hasn't introduced him/herslf and thus that
we don't know about, I'm game.

  Hi volunteers,

At one point we discussed having people greet new volunteers who have
recently joined the list. I haven’t had very many people email me directly
expressing interest so I thought I’d post here. For anyone interested in
greeting others, Alisa and I were thinking that it could just be as simple as
posting to the list once or twice a week with a friendly note to welcome anyone
new.

It could be as simple as: “Hi to anyone new to this discussion list! Welcome!
Please feel free to introduce yourself and don’t hesitate to ask questions.”

While we want to ensure that everyone feels welcome, we don’t want to clog up
the list with chatty posts. We kindly request that if anyone is feeling
especially friendly, please make sure no one else has already sent a greeting
recently (in the last few days) before posting. We shall see how this works,
and I’d greatly appreciate any feedback, whether positive or negative!

Thanks and have a great rest of the day!

  Best,

  Madeleine Linares
