Hi Jenny,
The only thing I can think of is that you often have to hold the binding of
the book down with more force when you're scanning the middle of the book.
The binding not being held down firmly enough does cause text from the
beginning or end of lines to be missing. But this wouldn't explain why you
got bad results when you retried scanning something from the beginning of
the book.
