HI Lynn,

For what it's worth. I don't generally run a spell check until after
I've read the book either. I do exactly as you generally do, most of the
time. I just thought it might make correcting those pesky recurring errors
one at a time so much easier maybe.

I love that there are so many different ways to solve problems, because
problems come up in some weird combinations. No way of doing things is
right for everyone. We all have to test what works best for each of us.
And then, when we come up against a bear of a book, see what we might do
differently that might help us.

The beauty of this list is that when folks have questions, the myriad
ways of doing things match the myriad styles of learning and preference of
people.

Mayrie

Hi Mayrie!

Normally, I do not spell check until I have read the book completely.
Everyone has a different procedure here. The reason I do not spell check in
the beginning is that I've found it too easy to make mistakes or correct
words that are meant to be spelled as they appear in the text. For me, it is
much easier to correct OCR errors either as I encounter them, or after I've
done a read through. I use spell check to help me pick up on things I missed
while reading--and that happens because I use a combination of speech and a
Braille display for reading. I know it's just the opposite for some
proofreaders, and for them it's beneficial to do a spell check first.

However, today, I did a spell check early on, and that is when I realized
the extent of the problem.

I've learned so much from you and others on this list who have provided all
sorts of tips and tricks. I want you all to know how much I appreciate it.
*smile*

Blessings.

Hi Lynn,

I feel for you. Have you thought of running a spell check before
reading? That way, you might not have to correct so many errors, or is that
what you're doing?

If it's taken you this long, even trying to do the spell check, I'd
reject the book. The errors that you are talking about could very likely be
fixed with a rescan with scanning settings adjusted for that book.

Just my thoughts. Sorry if you thought of all that already.

Mayrie

Hi everyone!

I'm not one to complain, most of you know that, but I'm proofreading a
submission that has many ... and I do mean many, scanning errors. Many of
these could have been caught with a simple spell check.

I'm not trying to shirk my responsibilities as a proofreader, but it's taken
me three hours to read and correct 38 pages, and the corrections are almost
all scanning errors such as die for the, me for the, thiis for this, thights
for thoughts...

I've never rejected a book for a scan quality issue, and I hope I never have
to do so.

There now, I feel better.

Blessings.

Lynnsky
