I think hold for's are fine but I think bookshare needs to handle it in a systematic way. 1. I think the web site needs to have a hold-for form and perhaps a page for the hole books. 2. I think that's a great idea, Molly.  And yours too, Mayrie.
When I used to validate, I picked books to proof because I either knew what they were about or because I knew what category they were in.
As a scanner, I hope that validators who will actually read through my books will do the proofing which means that the books have to be interesting to you guys. So, if I knew ahead of time who likes fantasy, sci-fi, or romance, to name a few, I could e-mail you and let you know about the books I'm planning to scan that I think you might be interested in.

I don't think anyone is trying to steal books out from under people. I totally recognize the need for hold for's, but I know that as a new proofreader it is sometimes frustrating when the only books that aren't on hold look to be difficult proofreads. I shy away from books that have been returned to the queue many times, or have notes that make me feel that as a newb, could not do the text justice. I think that sometimes we just need to keep on checking the books to be checked out queue, and be patient. I wonder if it would help if we are looking for a book to proof, if we let the list know what we might be interested in? Then scanners might be able to let us keep an eye out for scans to proof. I'm in the same boat as Marilyn. Please, I implore you, don't take books with a "hold for" on them because there is a reason why that "hold for" is there.
In my case, here's the back story. When I have a book with a "Hold for Judy S." on it, it's usually because 
1. I bought the book;
2. and asked a specific individual to scan it for me because I know the quality of the scanning from that experienced individual will be outstanding; and 3. I am willing to spend the time proofreading it in exacting detail to makes sure the final reader has a truly excellent book; and 
4. It's a book I really want to read.
Case in point: I bought "Last in their Class," at the cost of $25. I'm a West Point history buff and really wanted to read it. It was a witch to scan (put politely) for the individual who scanned it for me, and as a big a witch of proofread.
The text was difficult to scan and proof, as it is full of proper names of individuals and places and historical quotes with 19th century language. Additionally, the book had almost one hundred pages of footnotes, and a large index, both of which the individual who scanned the book and I took great care to make sure were as close to the original printed text as humanly possible because in this case the footnotes contained important primary material that greatly enhanced the content of the book.
If I'd happened to have other books that I'd bought and asked to have scanned show up on the "ready to be checked out" list, they would have sat for many weeks while I tackled this book.
So, as the recently deceased and much beloved Paul Harvey used to say, "That's the rest of the story." smile.
Please respect "Holds." There really is a reason why those books are sitting there waiting for a specific person to proofread them.
