The fire makes it a no-go because of the smoke. I think the road is closed just
past Lost Dutchman State Park.
This location has more light pollution than Picket-Post because of far east
Apache Junction and Gold Canyon.

I think that would be James Yoder.
Right now that’s probably too close to the smoke from the Woodbury fire. If the
road is even open.

Yes, thanks Tom - I am looking for someplace within an hour drive for
imaging.
I drove out there yesterday to check it out. It's about a 40 min
drive from Ahwatukee. It's in a Green Zone - Bortle Class 4 (SQM
21.53) according to lightpollutionmap.info. Looking south its Bortle
Class 3. You can forget about the north and east for imaging and
visual. It may be as good or better to the south than Picket-Post.
There are places where you can setup that are far enough away from I-8
so traffic (car lights) shouldn't be a problem. Overnight camping is $10.
Don't know about astronomers...
I have never seen it used during the summer months. I have seen RV's
there during the fall / winter. I will try imaging there in a few
months. If I do I will report back.

As I mentioned I am going up north tomorrow. I have a place that's
about 19 miles south-east of the Discovery Channel Telescope. About a 3 hour
drive.

I think Jim, being a busy guy, was looking for a site that's within an
hour or so of metro Phoenix. That RV park he mentioned is only 50
minutes from Tempe, and likely good enough for his purpose of imaging
southerly fields.
Hopefully, the presence of I-8 to its immediate south or the local
lights in the RV park aren't too much of a problem.
I'll show restraint this time, and not comment about the apparent
nighttime safety of Sonoran Desert National Monument (Vekol Rd.).
