The problem is, if there is only one name then (nameadd2) contains the
first address line, and I only want names on the one line. The data
comes in a .csv file; I know the first line is always a name, but I
can't tell where the names end and the address lines start without doing
a check.
So I have to test if (nameadd1) ends in "&", then I follow it with
(nameadd2), otherwise start a new line.
I am trying out the macro button info from the Word MVP site, at:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/UsingMacroButton.htm
and this looks promising, but it is complicated. I can pass in the merge
field (using private) but I'll have to put results in a property or
something like that - still have work to do.
I'd still like to hear about using text processing functions in a merge
field.

I think you are saying that the source data may have two names, a
primary-name (nameadd1) and a joint-name (nameadd2). This could mean the
"&" is in the primary-name content if there is a joint-name present for
the record?
If this is so, just add the joint-name merge field to the same line and
all should be sweet!
