So, I tried that. Box_Shrink in the .cht from the default 4 up to 5 (see diag.tif attached). Interestingly the values are now even a little bit worse peak 19 and avg 7.8 ?! I used only -q l -a m.

That would explain it, yes. It's a puzzle why that has happened though.
You might be able to use the scanin -a flag to fix the problem.
