Right, but there has to be more too it than that, since my instrument
with absolute black (ie. inside a black bag) doesn't take more than
30 seconds to respond, yet when presented with the screensaver
pattern, sometimes takes over 60 seconds to respond.


May I suggest this feature in Argyll?:-
Allow an option to take multiple readings at low IRE patches and average them?


Hmm, maybe. The thing is, when the reading is subject to quantization,
averaging multiple readings may not actually work, since each reading
may get rounded to the same value, and there is nothing to average between.
I'm not sure how many people are prepared to put up with readings
that take over a minute each either !
