Arachne at FreeLists---The Arachne Fan Club!

Hi Brian,

The interesting thing to me about this login to VCN is that it was
accomplished with a fresh install and by using the Arachne installation
wizard.

In most cases the Arachne installation wizard will create an effective
login for you without the need to futz around with Arachne.cfg by
trial and error. Trial and error is seldom as effective as the wizard
and can lead to much confusion.

In order to use the wizard all you need to know is the telephone number
of the ISP, a working DNS number to enter when prompted, and your username
and password. Rarely there is a problem with an "Init string" for the
modem. Most often you can just use "ATZ" or "AT&F0" and that information
is noted in the wizard.

Manual logins are usually not required and as the wizard notes "This option
is disabled by default, because some 90% of ISP's use PAP or CHAP
authentication these days." In other words you don't have to create a
"script" to authenticate yourself during login. The authentication will
happen "automagically" as we like to say around here.

Before delving into the workings of Arachne.cfg I urge anyone who is
having problems to try a *fresh*install and the wizard. Do not import
anything from another version. Just start from scratch and let the wizard
do the work.

The proof of the effectiveness of this method is that it was used by
the tech support person at VCN to login without even looking at the
Arachne.cfg.

It's the method I've always used and it works.

Of course many people prefer to muck around manually. That can work
for the Arachne expert and the knowledgeable minority, but it's a tough
way to go for the Arachne novice.

I'm glad you were able to get connected at VCN. Happy surfing!
