Roland,
You are right in respect to the CCF(conventional cap frame) style of cap 
frame restricting the width of the sewing field, hence the introduction of 
the WACF(wide angle cap frame) for those extra wide designs.

For visors I use two layes of the 4 inch wide tear-a-way stabilizer that is 
just made for the caps. It is stiff and heavy enough to support the 
visor....kind of acts like the upper portion of the crown of a cap for it to 
ride on. This has worked pretty well for us.......
