Hi Peggi, No, I was quite sure you're not a breed bigot. I totally agree with you, a dog that has a history of unprovoked biting (you know the kind I mean) is dangerous and that dog should not, under any circumstances, be allowed to survive while others, with no such history, are put down. That is, as you said, a travesty. Any dog can be a potential fighter, regardless of breed. And you are right about the fact that our seizure was not typical. My main point was that we don't always know the entire story and I hate dogs being lumped together because of breed. We all know there is still too much breed profiling going on. A dangerous dog is a dangerous dog, regardless of breed. By the same token, an adoptable dog is an adoptable dog, again, regardless of breed. That unfortunately is not the reality in many shelters. For example, when 17 Pitbulls were seized in Dothan and the owner was charged, not with FIGHTING the dogs, but with training the dogs to fight, based on paraphernalia, 13 of those dogs were PUPPIES, under the age of 12 weeks. I personally temperment tested every one of those dogs, including the adults every month for six months, until the judge made a decision regarding their fate. He ruled that we (Save-A-Pet) would be allowed to re-home the puppies. An hour later he reversed his decision, all must die, NOT because a single one failed the testing (including the adults) but because he was afraid the case against the owner would be lost if the dogs were deemed adoptable. I personally held each and every one of those beautiful, sweet and VERY adoptable dogs as they were euthanized. THAT is a travesty! Not every dog seized is a trained fighting dog. It's absurd that anyone would think so. The only bright spot in this entire incident is that I was able to testify against Johnnie Ray Lewis and he WAS sentenced to 102 years in prison. 6 years for each dog. Mobile County animal control officers and residents are about to find out. Even with a new $2 million shelter, boasting 10,000 square feet of space and a capacity to hold 100 animals, Mobile County Animal Shelter will be faced with the decision to euthanize as many as 30 or more adoptable dogs. In order to afford isolated cages for each of the 27 pit bull and pit bull mixes impounded from the raid on a suspected dogfighting ring in north Mobile County in early September, healthy dogs waiting adoption will lose their cages, and their chance for life. Animal experts state that dogs trained to fight are generally sequestered from other dogs, with the exception of participating in training or organized fights, and cannot tolerate the sight of another dog. Therefore, cages directly in front of the impounded fighting dogs have been emptied.
