Hi Peggi,

No, I was quite sure you're not a breed bigot. I totally agree with you, a dog
that has a history of unprovoked biting (you know the kind I mean) is dangerous
and that dog should not, under any circumstances, be allowed to survive while
others, with no such history, are put down. That is, as you said, a travesty.

Renee, i'm not a breed bigot<g>, i have small dogs that will
occasionally fight among themselves and have even been bitten while trying to
break up a fight! i don't think that all "Bully Breeds" or mixes of those
breeds should be painted with the same brush. my second favorite breed is the
Rottie because i have known them to be wonderful family dogs. i don't think
that toy dogs are any less prone to bite just because they are small. imo it
starts with breeding for the proper temperament and continues with proper
socialization and training of any dog no matter the size. that said, if any
dog is trained to be agressive whether to dogs or people it should be carefully
scrutinized before the said dog is allowed to live when others must die for no
other reason.peggi

          Hi Peggi,

I totally agree with you regarding the dogs that have been used for
fighting and "can't tolerate the sight of another dog". Any dog can be a
potential fighter, regardless of breed. And you are right about the fact that
our seizure was not typical. My main point was that we don't always know the
entire story and I hate dogs being lumped together because of breed. We all
know there is still too much breed profiling going on. A dangerous dog is a
dangerous dog, regardless of breed. By the same token, an adoptable dog is an
adoptable dog, again, regardless of breed. That unfortunately is not the
reality in many shelters.

Renee, there would be a difference, imo, between fighting
dogs "that can't tolerate the sight of another dog" and puppies that were
potential fighters because there was paraphernalia in the property used to
train dogs to fight. i agree that it was horribly unfair to put those puppies
down, however to put down other potentially adoptable dogs in favor of high
risk, fighting dogs is equally appalling to me. i truely wish that all dogs
could be rehabbed and adopted into responsible, loving homes. i applaud your
efforts in this special case. however i am afraid that it wasn't typical of
the seizure of most fighting dogs that are bred AND trained to be agressive.
that those dogs are favored over other adoptable dogs is the travesty to me.

There is always "more to a story". For example, when 17
Pitbulls were seized in Dothan and the owner was charged, not with FIGHTING the
dogs, but with training the dogs to fight, based on paraphernalia, 13 of those
dogs were PUPPIES, under the age of 12 weeks. I personally temperment tested
every one of those dogs, including the adults every month for six months, until
the judge made a decision regarding their fate. He ruled that we (Save-A-Pet)
would be allowed to re-home the puppies. An hour later he reversed his
decision, all must die, NOT because a single one failed the testing (including
the adults) but because he was afraid the case against the owner would be lost
if the dogs were deemed adoptable. I personally held each and every one of
those beautiful, sweet and VERY adoptable dogs as they were euthanized. THAT
is a travesty! Not every dog seized is a trained fighting dog. It's absurd
that anyone would think so. The only bright spot in this entire incident is
that I was able to testify against Johnnie Ray Lewis and he WAS sentenced to
102 years in prison. 6 years for each dog.

OMG!!! why would they put down adoptable dogs in
favor of dogs that probably can't be re-habbed? this is a travesty! peggi

What happens to dogs confiscated from a
“dogfighting ring” when the villain, the owner of the property and dogs, is not
a celebrity such as disgraced football player Michael Vick? Mobile County
animal control officers and residents are about to find out.

Even with a new $2 million shelter, boasting
10,000 square feet of space and a capacity to hold 100 animals, Mobile County
Animal Shelter will be faced with the decision to euthanize as many as 30 or
more adoptable dogs. In order to afford isolated cages for each of the 27 pit
bull and pit bull mixes impounded from the raid on a suspected dogfighting ring
in north Mobile County in early September, healthy dogs waiting adoption will
lose their cages, and their chance for life. Animal experts state that dogs
trained to fight are generally sequestered from other dogs, with the exception
of participating in training or organized fights, and cannot tolerate the sight
of another dog. Therefore, cages directly in front of the impounded fighting
dogs have been emptied.
