[access-uk] My phone talks rubbish - help!

Hi.
My talks-enabled Nokia N73 keeps beeping from time to time, sometimes when I'm talking to someone, and other times without real reason.
It is occasionally heard to say the following after a beep: "packet data connection active" 

Can someone tell me what this means and how, if possible, I can turn it off?
