Hi Caroline,I got it last year via ATW and had no problems in obtaining approval. You just need to state clearly the reasons why you require the software and perhaps why it cannot be done via other means.

Sorry for being late on this thread, but I'm just catching up on hundreds ofe-mails after ten days away. I'd be interested to know whether anyone has had success in obtaining the KNFB Reader through Access To Work. Is it the kind of product they are willing to fund, or have most people found it necessary to fund it themselves? Thanks, Caroline. -----Original Message-----From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf OfSteve Dryden Sent: 27 June 2009 21:01 To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [access-uk] Re: KNFB Mobile DemoActually Elanor, I'd say you'd have a much better chance of getting the KNFover the DBT upgrade any day. Duxbury is hardly going to give you muchadditional functionality, mind you, I guess it does depend on which version you have. If it is pre 2005 I think the braille code has changed. I'm sureyou could put forward a suitable case for being able to read supplementary notes and classwork if you go to their workshops. I have to say that this product is very expensive but revolutionary for blind people. As a student (I am not employed) I think from what I've heard about it that student's should be able to apply for it but I cannot imagine myself having approval for such an item, I've had enough trouble obtaining a braille embossor which is anitem of equipment only required by a blind person and I had an assessor atthe Open University who said I did not need an upgrade of DBT so can you imagine me looking for KNFB Reader, smile. There really should be considering the cost of it. I hope Jackie or someone at S and S will pass that on. There is after all, demos of Talks, and because KNFB is harder to use until you learn how toalign the camera, it is even more important that they should let you havea demo. Sight Village is being held in Birmingham between 14 and 16 July, inclusive. There may well be a Sight Village London later in the year. If, however, you would like a demo, then just call the office and someone will help you, and answer any questions you have. Much of the equipment we buy costs a lot of money, and it is important to know if a particular piece of kit is right for you. All I can say, without advertising, is that if anyone requires a demonstration of the products we sell, you contact the office and ask for one. We try to offer no-obligation demonstrations throughout the UK.Admittedly, there are some far-flung places where going to demo a pieceof equipment can be costly, and we do try to make every effort to accommodate such a scenario. In my role, I look after all the Braille products and K-NFB Reader mobile.I have met so many people in the last year, and been able to put voicesto the names I have conversed with through Email over several years of being on these lists. It's the customer focus and ensuring that a person gets what they want out of technology that makes my job so worthwhile and rewarding. I'm sorry Carol that you have had an unfortunate experience. Hi Carol You have my sympathy as I've been down that street as well. Several years ago I wanted to buy a portable book reader and the one to have was the Road Runner. I have a severe hearing loss and therefore hear mostly electronically. This made me wary as to whether it would be suitable for me. I phoned the dealer and was told the price etc. I explained my difficulty and fears so would I be able to return it if I needed to. In nocircumstances I was told as the machine would be second hand. If it wasunsuitable I'd have to find a buyer to purchase it off me. What he didn'trealise and was not interested in listening to was that only the actual machine would be used briefly as I would have used my own batteries outof courtesy and I never use head-phones ever as they are of no use to me. My own induction loop would have been plugged in instead. Another list member agreed to meet me and allow me to try his. It transpired I was unable to get on with it and never did purchase one. Butthe dealer in question, due to his short sightedness and rude behaviour has lost a potential customer for life. I would wait for hell to freezeover before I bought even a box of matches from him in the future. Hi all, I don't exactly apologise for this post and I'll try to keep it brief! I've just written about my recent experience when visiting the RNIB shop at Judd Street for the first time a few weeks back ... (I won't repeat here what I wrote there ...) My quest to get a proper indepth demonstration of the Plextalk Pocket has been exceedingly difficult ... and I've now decided to give it up.Not only was I unable to get anything like a demonstration at the RNIB,but I have declined to purchase the "Infotech" article. This was the last nail in the coffin for me! I was told this would cost me £10 as I'm not a regular subscriber to "Infotech" and you can no longer purchase individual articles at a reasonable rate. I think £10 is too steep and, despite my writing both Brian and Terry at T&T, I heard nothing from them. Well, that's just too bad! It seems my quest for a recorder I'll really like and get on with is just not to be! Surely, it ought to be easier than this to get proper demonstrations and a working knowledge of this high tech stuff for which we have to pay fairly high prices anyway ...
