Kevin thanks.  I guess the trouble is though that if the 
soundcard/volume settings are mucked up then Narator won't be 
heard either.  Unless narator does a check on loading.

hi ray, only thing i can think of is to use narator as a 
temporary solution
to check the sound settings. windows key +u should load narator 
in winXP
home.
