Thanks very much everyone for your responses to the silent computer problem. My friend did manage to reboot his computer, and the sound seemed to come back of its own accord. Nonetheless, he's had this disappearing sound problem before, and its very hard to see why it happens. I've passed on the volume control command, that is, sndvol32. that's useful for getting straight to the mixer. However, if you are not hearing anything at all, then its difficult to know exactly what's going on if you cannot see the screen. The Quickmix program, err, sounds the right approach to this problem as it can restore mixer settings to how you had them. Seems it could be a nice little add-on, placed in the start menu with a quick access letter, to help people get out of this particular hole. Goes without saying that whatever screen reader you are using, if this happens to you, then a quick mixer restoration must be a good thing if your only speech synth is via software speech. So again, thanks to everyone. Press Spacebar and hopefully you'll come to life again! -- Carol carol.pearson@xxxxxxxxxxxx -----Original Message----- From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Peter Logue Sent: Monday, February 28, 2005 8:22 PM To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [access-uk] Re: How do you wake up a silent computer?\ It would help if I knew the volume control shortcut to type into the run command field, like typing Outlook to launch Outlook or calc to run calculator. If you have to phone your friend, this is what he does. First, make sure that Jaws is loaded. 1. hit the windows key. 2. hit the letter P. 3. Hit enter. 4. Hit the letter E. 5. Hit the letter V. Wait a second or four. 6. Now tab twice. 7. hit the spacebar once. If you phone him and run him through this procedure all should be well, assuming he has his computer on Classic mode. A friend, the same one who had to ddowngrade to Windows XP home to use JAWS standard and who needed help with BT interenet, has had another problem, and not just once. The speech and sound from his computer have just vanished! He's totaly blind so its very hard to tell him what he might do to get the PC up and talking again. So, folks, how do you get sound back when it vanishes? No, the speakers are connected and OK, the volume is turned up. There's just no sound. I think it is the mixer volume controls being altered, most likely a mute setting. So, is there a command, or some sort of script file that stands a good chance of recovering lost sound? Such a thing ought to be possible to help, at least in some cases. Any thoughts?
