Hi Chris,
First of all, welcome on board.
The main differences between the two players, i.e. Plextalk and Booksense
can be summarised as follows:
Size: The booksense will easily fit in a pocket or handbag. The Plextalk, or
at least the PTX1 which the RNIB ship with their Talking Book Service is a
bulky unit, primarily because it includes a CD drive which the Booksense
does not. The Plextalk would probably fit in a backpack, but that's about
it.
Battery: As you've probably seen from one of my comments, the Plextalk
batteries degrade very quickly. I'm on my third player in just 14 months,
and I don't use the unit very often either. The Booksense has a rated
playing time of 20 hours. I'm not sure what the Plextalk is but it's less
than 10.
File Transfer: The Booksense can be used as a standard mass storage device
so you can copy files to it from your computer. Note this applies to the
T50XT model. The Plextalk does not have this facility, and also the USB host
controller on the Plextalk will not accept drives larger than 1GB (dependant
on firmware) or drives formatted using NTFS.
Formats: Both players have an on-board TTS so will read plain text and HTML
formatted documents. I'm not sure about Microsoft Word support.
That's a basic comparison between the two. Even though the Booksense does
not have a CD drive, for me I think the battery life and size well outweigh
any inconvenience of having to transfer content from CD to the Booksense.
Also, whereas I could use my iPod for the same purpose, I would lose the
ability to make use of the DAISY features which make reading these books so
enjoyable.
