Hi Hussein.

I'd just like to mention that you can in fact play daisy books on the IPodf Touch, IPhone and IPad devices with the purchase of additional apps like InDaisy from Levelware, www.levelware.com. It is a fully featured Daisy player so that is something worth considering if you do want all the other benefits an IDevice can offer you.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi Chris,

First of all, welcome on board.

The main differences between the two players, i.e. Plextalk and Booksense
can be summarised as follows:
Size: The booksense will easily fit in a pocket or handbag. The Plextalk, or
at least the PTX1 which the RNIB ship with their Talking Book Service is a
bulky unit, primarily because it includes a CD drive which the Booksense
does not. The Plextalk would probably fit in a backpack, but that's about
it.
Battery: As you've probably seen from one of my comments, the Plextalk
batteries degrade very quickly. I'm on my third player in just 14 months,
and I don't use the unit very often either. The Booksense has a rated
playing time of 20 hours. I'm not sure what the Plextalk is but it's less
than 10.
File Transfer: The Booksense can be used as a standard mass storage device
so you can copy files to it from your computer. Note this applies to the
T50XT model. The Plextalk does not have this facility, and also the USB host
controller on the Plextalk will not accept drives larger than 1GB (dependant
on firmware) or drives formatted using NTFS.
Formats: Both players have an on-board TTS so will read plain text and HTML
formatted documents. I'm not sure about Microsoft Word support.

That's a basic comparison between the two. Even though the Booksense does
not have a CD drive, for me I think the battery life and size well outweigh
any inconvenience of having to transfer content from CD to the Booksense.
Also, whereas I could use my iPod for the same purpose, I would lose the
ability to make use of the DAISY features which make reading these books so
enjoyable.

I hope this helps, but please don't hesitate to come back with any
additional questions. I am putting in the order today or tomorrow, so
should be able to help with first-hand experience in the next few days.

Hi,

I am new to this list.

How do both of these players compare to the Plextalk/Bookport? I am fairly
new
to the world of DAISY and recently subscribed to the RNIB talking book
service.
The CD player works great, but would prefer something more portable like
the
Plextalk one or something similar. Those who use DAISY players containing
SD
card readers, where do you get your content from? Anyone had any
experience
of using DAISY players on Apple iOS devices?

Hi Hussein

I would just add that the BookSense has a replaceable battery, whereas
the Milestone has to be returned to RNIB. If you do a lot of reading,
this might be a consideration worth bearing in mind.

Hi Jackie

Thanks for your insight and input on this. I would primarily use the
Booksense for reading text files or Daisy talking books so the less
than fantastic music quality is not such an issue.

I'll be ordering later this week so I'll have it ready for a few
longish train rides in the next few weeks.

Thanks again.

Hi Hussein

My partner and I have used the BookSense XT, Martin extensively so,
and think it is a nice little machine. I personally wouldn't rate it
for
music,
but then I wouldn't rate any of those players for music, and think
this is where the iPod family leaves them for dead. But if you want
DAISY and documents read to you, then BookSense handles them well,
and is an easy player to get around.

Having said that, because he is such an avid book fan, I bought
Martin the Milestone 312 Pro for Christmas, and he just loves the
thing. He likes its portability, the nice Rachel voice, and the
speaker and recording
quality.
Its downside at present is that it doesn't read as many formats as
BookSense, only coping I think with text files.

I hope that provides you with enough info. Others will doubtless
chip in with their thoughts.

Subject: [access-uk] Booksense thoughts

Hello there,

Having seen the Booksense at the recent Sight Village 2011
exhibition, I'm quite taken with the player and am considering making a
purchase.

The current PTX1 player I have on loan from RNIB is, to put it
frankly, unusable when it comes to battery life. Less than two
months usage and I'm down to 20 minutes use out of it on batteries if
I'm lucky, and that's with only connecting it to the AC supply for
charging. I am considering asking RNIB for another player (a
different model as this is the second PTX1
that's
gone out on me), but I was looking at purchasing the Booksense for
myself.

I'd be looking at the TX50 model, as I might as well go the whole hog
and have the Bluetooth etc. included.

Can anyone who has used this player for a reasonable length of time
offer any advice regarding the worthwhileness of a purchase?

Thanks in advance for your time and help.
