Hi Eleanor

As far as I know, the Specialist Campus Assistant is provided by the
university, and not funded through DSA. Mine is called Bernie, and she is
absolutely fantastic. I go to university two days a week for this Semester.
I am doing journalism part-time, and I truly love it at Ulster. Bernie
takes me everywhere. She helps me with scanning, reading, taking notes, and
is an absolute scream too which is why we have already earned the title of
being the Terrible Twins.

I had wanted to go full-time, but I am suffering so badly with my back now
that it is only possible to do so much at a time. The medication is very
potent, and makes me sleep quite a lot, so I've asked Bernie to carry a
knitting needle about with her so she can poke me when I start to drift off.
(smile).

I must say that having a Specialist Campus Assistant makes life so much
easier as it takes the stress out of wondering where to go and how to get
there. Without Bernie, there would be no course, so perhaps it is something
you need to look into Eleanor as I don't know if it is mandatory or down to
the student to finance it. Certainly I haven't been asked to.

Kind Regards,

Jackie Cairns

hi Jackie
I am thinking of moving to a brick university in the new year! Can you tell
me does your class-room assistant pay come out of your DSA? as this will be
a consideration of mine, with my non-medical helper allowance somewhere in
the region of four thousand a year.

Eleanor
