Actually, I can imagine this would be helpful to blind musicians as well.

Rather than a compile time option, can it be made runtime, with a switch in
'Settings'?

We've slowly been moving all of these across, because compile time options cause
headaches for the distros and confusion for users when people talk about
features they can't see.

For example, although we still have the jack/alsa options, they will be
going soon. These are the latest to be made runtime accessible, albeit with a
restart needed - changes on the fly would be a nice improvement :)
