Dear Neighbors-
It is now time for action.
On 13 September, at 1pm, the Line Siting Committee of the Arizona Corporation
Commission will begin hearing testimony regarding TEP's plan to place high
power transmission lines on 75-125 foot tall poles from 36th and Kino to
Banner-UMC, thence to Grant and I-10. The poles, up to 6 feet in diameter at
the base, will run through long established residential neighborhoods, on quiet
residential streets, through historic neighborhoods, next to churches,
elementary schools, and hospitals.
A coalition of 11 neighborhoods and preservation societies, with its allies,
will argue against TEPs proposal. Generous people from across the coalition
have donated time, energy, and dollars to assure we will be professionally
represented at the hearings. We thank you for your help. Now we need everyone's
voice.
I urge you to oppose TEP's plan. You may voice your opposition using an online
form, accessible from the Sam Hughes Neighrbood Association website:
https://samhughes.org/category/tep-power-poles/
I further urge you to contact Mayor and Council and encourage them to support
the neighborhoods on this issue.
You will find there information regarding reasons to oppose TEP's plan in the
form of sample letters to TEP and Mayor and Council. You are free to make the
best use of this material in expressing your views.
You may also write a physical letter to the ACC, however you would be required
to submit 25 copies.
I'd like to stress this is not about blind opposition to change. Indeed, we
fully support access to assured power for all Tucsonans. For too long our
neighbors to the south have endured brownouts and blackouts due to TEP's
prolonged inability to service this area. What we propose is to provide power
without harming the customers.
Our response to TEP plans is modern, straight forward, affordable: bury the
lines. This has been done successfully across the country, in Virginia,
Wisconsin, Scottsdale. Using TEP's highest dollar estimates, we can bury the
lines at cost of 14 cents / month for the average residential customer, a cost
so low TEP can readily absorb it without a rate hike. We can maintain the
Kino-Campbell Gateway route Tucson has invested ~$100M in building. We can
maintain the essential character of our neighborhoods. We can provide a
template for Tucson's future.
We ask for your support.
