Summer rains bring a profusion of new green growth to parched desert
vegetation, along with plenty of croaking toads and flying insects. Before
you prune your growing trees, tune into our next Speaker Series on Wednesday
at 5:30pm. In "Tree Care 101," renowned tree scientist Dr. Jim Downer will
explain updated pruning recommendations. Learn how to prune your trees to

Preventing Storm Damage to your Trees
Help your trees stand up to the weather with proper care
There are several reasons why a tree may be more susceptible to being damaged
in a storm
Poor pruning - 'lion-tailing' is a common example of improper, over-pruning
that removes an excessive number of smaller, interior branches, leaving only
the ends of the branches with foliage. Gutting the tree in this manner
creates an uneven distribution of force on the ends of the branches, causing
branches to break, tear, or split. Lion-tailing results in structurally
weak, unhealthy trees that are prone to storm damage.

2. Improper watering - to establish deep roots, water your tree slowly to a
depth of 3'. As the tree grows, apply water out, away from the trunk,
corresponding to the drip edge of the tree canopy. Proper watering promotes
a strong, deep root system that is capable of anchoring the tree during
strong winds.
3. Inadequate growing space - small planting areas are common in our urban
environments. Tree roots need room to spread. Cramped locations don't
provide enough space for adequate root growth preventing your tree from
developing the stability it needs to stand strong in a storm.
4. Planting too deeply - a buried trunk flare causes deterioration of tree
trunk at the soil line. Don't amend the soil in your planting hole, use
native soil to back fill the tree hole.
5. Structural defects - especially included bark. Included bark forms in
the junctions of co-dominant branches where the union of the branches form a
narrow angle, creating a "V" as opposed to a "U" at the junction of two
branches. As your tree grows, heavy winds put stress on the included bark
branch junction and can cause splitting and breaking at the junction. Try to
address these narrow joints with pruning while the tree is young.
Parking lot trees are given only very narrow planting strips. Poor pruning
and poor watering practices also result in storm damage.
How to remedy a storm damaged tree.
Prune wind-damaged branches that are ripped, split, or broken should be dealt
with before the next storm arrives to exacerbate the break or introduce decay

Tree Care 101 with Dr. Jim Downer
Trees are glorious work horses in a challenging desert climate. To thrive and
provide the many benefits mature trees give an urban setting, they need a
little human help. Renowned tree and plant scientist, educator, and tree
lover, Dr. Jim Downer will teach you to be a better steward of the trees in
your care. You will learn:
- best practices for pruning native desert trees throughout their lifespan;
- how to determine if your trees need pruning;
- how to bring life to your desert soil;
- where and how to water to ensure your tree gets the water it needs over
time;
- simple sustainability strategies to save you water, work, and worry while
nurturing your trees to enhance longevity.
Over the last several decades pruning science has changed. During the
presentation you will learn where cuts should be made, and at what age, to
avoid harming your trees by over-pruning. Dr. Downer will explain how correct
pruning ensures the sound structure of a developing desert shade tree while
enhancing its form, beauty, and performance. Learn what desert trees need
from you to ensure your trees become living legacies for the future.

Neighborhood Trees are Cool!
We are preparing for a busy planting season! Together with an army of
volunteers, Trees for Tucson will plant thousands of trees with
heat-vulnerable neighborhoods this planting season, all across Tucson, in
support of Mayor Romero’s Tucson Million Trees initiative. This important
work is made possible by the generous support of Hamstra Heating & Cooling -
we are grateful for all the work they do to bring the cooling power of trees
(along with the many other benefits they provide) to the most heat-impacted
neighborhoods.
Please join us Saturdays from 9 to 11am, October through March, and help
plant 100 native and desert-adapted shade trees at a time in a low-canopy
neighborhood. Planting trees is fun, educational, and family friendly. Watch

hours on a Saturday morning and you'll be glad you did. We supply everything
you need, including tools, gloves, and expert instruction. You need only wear

the City of Tucson’s App that puts garbage, recycling, special waste
collection details and more at your fingertips, anytime you want.
The Recycle Coach ™ tool lets users download or access the full range of
information about collection schedules that Tucson provides to residents. By
using Recycle Coach™, Tucsonans can check for regular and special
collections, household hazardous waste or e-waste collections, and sign up to
receive notifications when they want.
Recycle Coach™ includes:
- A calendar that shows the customer's Trash and Recycling schedule,
including holiday changes, brush and bulky dates, and HHW collection schedules
- A look up tool about recyclables and non-accepted waste
- Problem report tool that enables residents to notify ES via e-mail and
photo of problems like a missed pick-up, illegal dumping, or container
replacements
