Some folks are already conducting Chimney Swift watches. The WI Chimney Swift Working Group would appreciate your help with counts conducted this coming weekend, Aug 31-Sept 3. This year, on one night over the weekend Aug-September 3 observe the roost starting about 30 minutes before sunset and estimate the number of swifts that enter. The number of swifts you might see going into a chimney will vary from chimney to chimney, so at first you may just be counting by ones and twos. For those chimneys with multiples of swifts going in, you may end up counting by 10s and 20s. See more information about these on the MN Audubon swift webpages, including more directions: http://mn.audubon.org/chimney-swift-sit Chimneyswift.org also gathers swift data, however their dates vary from those we have chosen, working in conjunction with the MN efforts. Since our counts take place at a more northern latitude, we suggest doing them on the Aug 31-Sept 3 weekend. Please send your results to me - e-mail address given below. Please call or write with any questions. -- William P.
