I checked out the above two locations this morning. From other posts, it sounds like shorebird habitat is poor in most of the state. Both spots are decent for shorebirds, especially the Van Patten dikes. However the habitat is not as good as it was last fall, but is still decent. At the Anderson Sod Farm (Winnegamie Rd, Winnebago co), there were just 120 Killdeer, but it still has inviting habitat for Buff-br. Sandpiper (one was present several days ago). The Van Patten dikes (Outagamie co, between Black Creek and Shiocton), where they have cut the grass on the dikes--hurray, had 8 shorebird species. Nothing unusual, that included 3 Semip. Plovers, 160 Killdeer, Lesser Yellowlegs, Semip., Least, Spotted and Pectoral Sandpipers, and Wilson's Snipe. In addition 4 heron species were present, again nothing unusual. Hopefully some interesting species will appear as the month progresses.
