Shorebirds continue to hang out on the riverbed behind the power substation
in Husty. Yesterday at least 200 birds, 8 species including 15 Wilson's
Phalarope. This morning early were no WP but late this afternoon made a
quick stop and there were 15 again. At one point a lot of the birds flushed
and most did not return. But when I left there were still about 40 birds
with 2 WP. On each of the last couple days have also seen several great
blue heron, green heron and belted kingfisher. One gull continues to hang
out and late afternoon into evening the air above the river is swarming
with swallows. The area is not classic mudflat shorebird habitat. It is
mostly water 1"-4" deep with small gravel bars and rock. At times the
phalaropes have to stop spinning because they hit areas where the water
isn't deep enough. Sure is enjoyable watching these birds at 50'-100'
distance.
