Hello All, I spent the first part of the day birding the Trempealeau NWR, and it was very productive. The most notable species was a SUMMER TANAGER along the far east side of the auto loop. It was primarily on the west side of the road among the scattered trees, and spent much of its time near the ground. It is a first year male, with the front half red and the back half yellow. It was seen by at least four other birders while I was there. Other highlights include Sora, Woodcock, Rusty Blackbird, Nashville Warbler, Yellow Warbler, and Northern Harrier along the Marshland Access Rd. Many Bufflehead and Ruddy Duck, as well as a couple Canvasbacks and Forster's Terns at the observation deck. Baltimore Oriole, Orchard Oriole, Nashville Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, Blue-winged Warbler, Orange-crowned Warbler, Warbling Vireo, Eastern Kingbird, Horned Grebe, Red-breasted Mergansers, and many more Ruddy Ducks and Bufflehead on Keip's Island. Red-headed Woodpecker, Nashville Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, and a Brown Thrasher along the rest of the auto loop. Ended the day with all 7 woodpeckers and 10 warblers, with a total of 85 species. Not bad for the last weekend in April! A complete list is below.
