I just spent a few days in the Florence County/Forest County area and I had crossbill flyovers in many locations. Though my view was usually blocked by trees, the few flocks that I was able to visually verify were indeed Red Crossbills but suspect I also had at least one White-winged Crossbill flyover. Locations include the Pine River bridge in Forest County, Scott-Shelp Lake area of Forest County, Grandma Lake area of Florence County, Lost Lake area of Florence County and Morgan Lake area of Florence County. Also at Morgan Lake I had Evening Grosbeaks and at Grandma Lake there appears to be a pair of Trumpeter Swans taking up residence. I observed 3 black bears yesterday. Always fun to see! Bird activity seemed markedly increased from the last time I was up there. I had put a feeder up in my yard and for several weeks nothing found it. I was beginning to wonder what species will be the "finder" of a new feeder much like the house sparrow is a great finder in the south part of the state. To my surprise it was a good number of Purple Finches, so that was nice to see.
