Here is more information about this site. A handicapped gravel path leads north from the parking lot at the east end of South Beach Dr. that is located off S. Washington St. just south of the Port Washington Power Plant. Also available at the parking lot are 2 picnic tables, a port-a-potty, and a trash receptacle along with a path leading to the beach where canoes and kayaks can be launched. Sometimes an algae mat develops along the sandy shore of Lake Michigan here, but it was quite small this morning. The peregrine nesting box is located overhead on the southeast corner of the power plant roof and is easily viewed. The path leading to the sanctuary from the parking lot, which has a line of trees and shrubs between it and the rip-rapped shoreline, joins with a circular gravel path that encircles the bird sanctuary. This morning water was being pumped into the pond/wetland that comprises most of the sanctuary. It is hoped that water levels can be manipulated to attract shorebirds and maybe some waders. A few small shrubs have been planted at intervals on the earthen berm located between the circular path and the wetland/pond. There is also a line of trees and shrubs on the east side of the sanctuary. Hopefully this woody vegetation will attract migrants coming in off Lake Michigan. At the southeast corner of the sanctuary, there is a fishing platform where one can cast south into Lake Michigan. I don't know if there is a plan for a strategically placed sitting bench or two (I hope so). Sanctuary Rules: It is open from dawn until dusk, no motorized vehicles, bicycles, or dogs are allowed, and pedestrians are to stay off the rip-rap and stay on the path.
