Tichigan State Wildlife Area (the western bay of Lake Tichigan) in northwestern Racine County had a very impressive diversity of waterfowl this morning. This large bay was full of waterfowl and gulls. The eastern bay of Lake Tichigan is frozen over with rotten ice and had no birds. Unfortunately the western bay is difficult to reach. You can hike the DNR dike off of Bridge St., but that is roughly a 3 mile loop. Otherwise you have to follow lake roads and try to peek between houses and trees. The western bay had many of the waterfowl species reported lately in southern WI. Birds of note were: Ruddy Ducks (a large flock) Common Loon (one bird) Horned Grebe (one bird) American White Pelican (about a dozen) Northern Flicker (singing in a nearby tree) Also nearby in a flooded cornfield near the intersection of Bridge St. and Fox River Rd., were some interesting birds: Wilson's (Common) Snipe (some close to the road) Pectoral Sandpipers (likely a hundred individuals with more flocks arriving) Greater Yellowlegs (sprinkled around the field and amongst a flock of N. Shovelers). Good birding, Maureen Gross Mukwonago, Waukesha County #################### You received this email because you are subscribed to the Wisconsin Birding Network (Wisbirdn).
