This morning there was a dead Barn Swallow in front of Milwaukee's Discovery Center. Cause of death looked to have been a window strike. Several other swallows were circling low over the dead bird, chattering noisily. Then three of them landed on the sidewalk and more or less took turns gingerly walking up to the dead bird, chattering at it, and flying away. They seemed confused, like they couldn't understand what the dead bird was doing. This whole process was repeated one or two more times. I don't want to anthromorphisize too much, but the swallows seemed genuinely concerned/distressed about their immobile comrade. Interesting...
