In Illinois we received this "heads-up" for this period from our ebird reviewer
with a list of the birds that may be tagged as confusing, which is greatly
appreciated. it's great the reviewers are willing to help new birders better
understand some of the confusing bird ID's.
"The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) will be held Friday, February 16, through
Monday, February 19, 2018. The GBBC leverages eBird to help track the
observations. To participate, please visit the Web site below for details.

Many beginning birders will be introduced to eBird for the first time through
the GBBC. For those who have been using eBird for awhile, you may see some
anomalies that week. Thresholds for some common birds that may pose a potential
ID problem for beginners (e.g., Downy/Hairy Woodpecker, Sharp-shinned/Cooper's
Hawk, Purple/House Finch, etc.) are purposefully set low and may prompt the
observer for documentation. Please enter a quick note to the reviewer
concerning the ID, your experience, etc. Reviewers would appreciate it.
Thank you for your patience."

Please be kind to the eBird reviewers! Enter a few words describing the
bird that will confirm the ID and differentiate it from other species which
could be confused with it. This will allow the reviewer to validate the
sighting without an email exchange.

Don't forget that today is the first day of the GBBC. If you have neverFreeLists / Wisconsin Birding Network<//www.freelists.org/list/wisbirdn>

And, as John Kivikoski reminded us the other day, eBird will be asking you
to "confirm" species that may seem obvious to experienced birders. Keep in
mind, this is temporary, and is designed to reinforce IDs that might be
tricky for certain species for less-experienced birders. Yes, it's an
extra step, but getting peeved about it won't do you or your blood pressure
any good.
