We saw and heard a loon calling on Swift Lake, a small private lake, this morning. We have never heard a loon calling in southeastern Wisconsin and wonder if this is rare? There was another loon on nearby Doyle's Lake which is along Little Prairie Rd between Swift Lake Rd and Scout Road near the little town of Troy Center. We believe this was a different loon, since we did not see it fly, and the Swift Lake loon was still present when we checked a few minutes later. Was the loon calling a potential mate from the other lake? We also saw a loon today on Lower Spring Lake in Palmyra. Other waterfowl on Doyle's Lake today included Wood Ducks, Bufflehead, Ring-necked Ducks and Canada Geese. plus Pied billed Grebes. On little pond near home = Hooded Mergansers and Bufflehead On Lower Spring Lake (besides Loon) = Green-winged Teal, Common Mergansers, Bufflehead, Mallards and C. Geese.
