Eagle Eye Solutions, based in the United Kingdom, is launching a new=20
service today called Buymeabeer.com using a Linux-based server=20
platform.
It's a simple concept -- so simple, one wonders why no one else has=20
implemented the idea until now. Visit the Buymeabeer.com Web site,=20
select the drink you want to send, then enter your friend's mobile=20
phone number and your credit card number.=20
Buymeabeer.com sends a text message voucher to the recipient, who=20
then brings the phone to any Corney & Barrow bar and "redeems" the=20
text message for the pre-paid drink.=20
Steve Rothwell, the director of Eagle Eye Solutions, said Linux was=20
the logical choice to run the critical Web servers for=20
Buymeabeer.com. "Linux is one of the most stable platforms there=20
is," he said.=20
Not only that, but the low cost to install, run, and maintain Linux=20
was a large part of what made Linux the most desirable option for=20
Eagle Eye.=20
Rothwell said the company expects to receive anywhere from 50,000 to=20
100,000 hits per day once the service is established. They're=20
running two full-fledged servers now, with two backup servers in the=20
wings should the need arise.=20
Patrons can choose from any of 14 different drink selections at the=20
Buymeabeer.com site, ranging from a bottle of Kirin beer for =A33, all=20
the way up to a bottle of Dom Perignon for =A3110. Each transaction=20
carries a =A31 handling fee.=20
Eagle Eye was created specifically to mastermind the Buymeabeer.com=20
project, which Rothwell hopes will be the first of many text voucher=20
services for the company.=20
Rothwell said Eagle Eye Solutions is planning to roll out the=20
Buymeabeer.com concept to the U.S. in as little as six months. The=20
company is also working on offering a full range of text message=20
services, including flower delivery, "buy me a cup of coffee," and=20
ticket purchasing.=20
Rothwell said that as far as he knows, Eagle Eye is the first=20
company to offer text message vouchers on a large scale, but they=20
have been tried elsewhere.=20
The Belfast Film Festival in Ireland offers patrons the opportunity=20
to secure reservations via text message, and Finnair allows its=20
frequent flyer passengers to check in for flights via text messages.=20
Passengers receive a return text message specifying flight details,=20
and, as long as they only have carry-on luggage, are entitled to=20
bypass customary check-in procedures; however, they still must pass=20
through a metal detector and security check. The service is=20
currently limited to flights leaving from Helsinki and Stockholm.
