Revving Up the Interest in Linux =20 By Chandra Devi=20 09/23/04 9:02 AM PT=20 Major Linux companies such as Red Hat and SuSE have certified their=20 distributions for Linux Standard Base, a standard for Linux=20 distributions and Linux-based applications design, to ensure=20 interoperability among vendors. LSB standardizes the core=20 functionality of Linux and GNU tools. It intends to help the Linux=20 community avoid the fragmentation that occurred with Unix. Sybase ASE Linux Express Edition =96 FREE The first enterprise-class commercial database that can take you=20 from pilot to deployment for zero dollars and zero risk.=20 Despite reports indicating that the move from Windows to Linux has=20 been slow and that companies are cautious about adopting Linux, open=20 source proponents are singing a different song altogether. IBM (NYSE: IBM) , for instance, says that the recent spate of events=20 in the open source and proprietary worlds will see Linux's momentum=20 picking up. According to Hemant Shah, manager at IBM Linux Integration Zone in=20 Singapore, although the number of Windows installations is still=20 much more than for Linux, the rate of change in Linux installations=20 is obvious. On a relative scale, the growth for Linux adoption is=20 great.=20 IBM, Dell Lead Push=20 He says that commercial adoption of Linux is on the rise and a key=20 reason for this is the support for Linux from information=20 technology giants such as IBM, Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) , Oracle=20 (Nasdaq: ORCL) and SAP (NYSE: SAP) . With big names coming on board=20 and supporting their products on Linux, enterprises have more=20 confidence in adopting it. "People basically are concerned about who to rely on for support.=20 They are doubtful about downloading free applications from the=20 Internet to run their systems. "However, with established companies supporting Linux, they have now=20 gained confidence as they are assured of its availability, continual=20 support and improvements," he explains.=20 Red Hat and SuSE=20 Furthermore, he says that major Linux companies such as Red Hat=20 (Nasdaq: RHAT) and SuSE have certified their distributions for=20 Linux Standard Base (LSB), a standard for Linux distributions and=20 Linux-based applications design, to ensure interoperability among=20 vendors. LSB standardises the core functionality of Linux and GNU=20 tools. It intends to help the Linux community avoid the fragmentation that=20 occurred with Unix . LSB-certified means Linux vendors will be able to reach a wider=20 market by designing their distributions and applications to a common=20 denominator.=20 The Linux Advantage=20 In contrast to proprietary software developer's vendor lock-ins and=20 absence of interchangeability, Linux users are continuously=20 benefiting from the rapid innovation and enhancements made to Linux,=20 enabled by the open source development approach, says Hemant, adding=20 that unlike proprietary software, Linux users are assured of=20 availability, interoperability and reliability. In addition, Hemant sees a huge potential for Linux adoption with=20 support for Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and=20 Windows NT Server 4.0 coming to an end (on Dec. 31). According to him, a significant number of existing Windows NT=20 customers will need to develop a migration strategy with this=20 discontinuation, and Linux provides an answer to the migration=20 strategy as it provides both the functionality of Windows NT and=20 Unix. Linux has also been proven to be stable and less expensive=20 than Windows. It is an opportunity for enterprises to reduce their total cost of=20 ownership around Windows, Hemant adds. He explains that Windows' only edge now over Linux is that there are=20 more people with Windows skills. Linux expertise is not yet that=20 widespread. It's the same reason people are not turning to Unix as=20 well -- the lack of expertise.=20 IBM's Strategy=20 On IBM's Linux strategy, Hemant outlines that Linux has been a great=20 element in its strategy to provide its customers choice. "IBM has a comprehensive solutions on Linux as we strive to=20 transform our clients into on-demand businesses. Every software,=20 server and hardware is Linux-enabled. "The combination of this open source operating system and IBM's=20 comprehensive range of software over multiple hardware platforms=20 allows our clients to quickly respond to market changes with=20 flexible, reliable, secure and cost-effective solutions," Hemant=20 says.=20 =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Albert =20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20 ------------------------ Yahoo!
