Frankly, it depends on the manufacturer. Some require airflow around all sides, some have sufficient airflow through the front and back. Is there airflow to the back of your rack from someplace else? If not, I would not even ask the question to the vendor... you need airflow, and the only way you'll get it is from spaces. HTH!
