Hi, Ron. I'll keep playing with these streams. If I find any methods for
playing them in Winamp, I'll write about how to do it here.

  Thanks much for the tips.

  Evan

    Hi Evan,

Well you're on the right track. Basically if you choose view link source,
or download the pointer file which is possible in most cases, then you bring
that file up in a text editor and use trial and error to find the address that
works. Generally (though there are exceptions,) the ones with the http prefix
can be ruled out unless they are followed by an IP address as in
    http://24.194.56.38:8000 or something like
    http://24.195.68.36.m3u

More likely candidates are addresses beginning with RTSP (a real stream) or
MMS (a windows media stream)
Other HTTP prefixes might indicate banner adds, or other graphics for the
page and an internal browser plug-in.

If you want the windows media streams to play in Winamp add the prefix
?=.wma and in many cases they will play. Also try ?mswmext=.wma which also can
work in some cases.

There was a guy named Walt on this list who had determined a very
sophisticated method of finding streams--even embedded ones (so he says) but
the method was so complex that I was never able to get it to work on my systems.

I went over to aolradio.com and selected Edit in Notepad here for one of
the XM channels and there's a bunch of urls in here. Thinking that it would be
a good strategy to find the url I needed to open in Winamp, I did a search for
m3u and pls and found nothing in the file. Which url are you supposed to use to
play the stream in Winamp. There doesn't seem to be an obvious candidate for
the address to copy over to play in Winamp in this file. I picked a couple of
them and removed the quotes and what looked like some other preliminary stuff,
but it didn't work. Maybe it's a necessary part of the url? How should I find
the correct url to copy over?

      Thanks for any advice.

      Evan

Hi Ivan and all, you can open up either a .m3u or a .pls file with note
pad, and get the address of a stream that way, but related, is a problem I'm
having, and that is, I thought I remembered that there was a branch of the on
line media tree-view that dealt with xm stations, but now, with winamp 5.13,
there is only 30 stations total in the winamp library, so, are the xm stations
included in the shoutcast radio streams, or are they another branch of the
tree-view, because all I see is shoutcast radio, and shoutcast tv, and I
couldn't do any search for any xm stations what so ever, so if a o l is cutting
back on the xm streams, that is a shame, but at least, I got to hear the
Jackson Armstrong tribute, though, I didn't hear any stuff from the west coast,
and we should have, since he was out here.

I'm not sure how you find them. I got the list of about fifty or so
from someone whom I believe is, or was at least, on this list. You can go to
aol.com or the XM web site and play the stations, but they use a special player
for that. I think there's a way to get those stream addresses out of the
stand-alone players and into Winamp, but I don't know how to do it. I hope that
is still possible, though, and that I can learn how if these addresses change
at the end of April. If they stop playing them through AOL, it's a sure bet
that they will.

        Hi,
How do you find other XM channels?

        Thanks.

Here is the address for the Sixties on 6 channel as copied directly
from my Winamp Bookmarks file. I assure you it works, having just tested it.
It's quite long, though. I've isolated it with a couple of blank lines around
it so as you can copy and paste it with confidence. <smile> I also heard
Armstrong in Pittsburgh in the mid 70s on a station called 13Q. I have heard
few -- if anyone -- who could talk so fast, or so energetically. I wonder how
much coffee that guy drank, or was it something with more stimulating power?

Where? You didn't give it in that email, you just said "Here it be".
Then you had all your information after that. Pam.

Hi all, maybe I'm out of touch, but I'm using winamp 5.13, and need the
address, or the .pls file for xm sixties, if it is still on winamp,
because we lost a legendary disk jocky on Saturday named Jackson
Armstrong at age 62, and Terry Young will do a tribute to him tomorrow
on xm sixties, on his show from 1 to 6 pm, pacific time, or 4 to 9 pm
eastern, or from Thursday, 20 to Friday morning 01 u t c, and once
foofling with the winamp 5.13 library, I could only find four entries
under the oldies portion of the combo box, and I have put the number of
entries under manage views to 10,000, so maybe an appropriate question
would be, is xm even being offered in winamp anymore, because I don't
have a receiver or anything, and my existing uvox file didn't work, so
if somebody has the current address for the xm sixties and seventies
streams, if they are still available in winamp, it would greatly be
appreciated, as I only found 30 total entries in the winamp library,
and thanks in advance very much, but I wanted to hear this tribute to a
        legendary talent, Jackson Armstrong.

        Marty
