Pick one or the other of PM or nt disk mgr -don't mix tools.
nt4 will get along just fine on volumes set up with pm 5 or 6 -
follow the partition size and location rules.
(part of the problem is that the setup version of disk manager is pretty 
old, even on later version of nt cdroms - this stuff was written a long 
time ago, relatively speaking).
You CAN set up a fat and then an extended ptn of all available space and 
then a < 4g ptn  and install comfortably. AFTER you install service packs 
(which fix windisk), you can use partitions larger than 4g for data volumes 
(remembering that the system loader will still be confused by a boot ptns > 
4g). use pm to set these up in the extended partition. My "standard" nt on 
ide partition structure goes pretty much like this and works reliably.
