Similarly, drivers also make the decision whether to write their
settings in a place that gets persisted, or in a place that gets
wiped out when the driver is uninstalled.
The problems that I'm speaking about is not related to the settings
stored by the driver. They may occur even if the driver doesn't store
anything, but exposes different filters, pins and formats in different
conditions (for example, a hardware configuration). The system alone,
using its internal data, decides which endpoints will be accessible,
which formats to accept, which formats to deny etc. Neither the user
or driver developer can affect this. And in many cases, system's
behavior is beyond of logic, it looks like a random. Normal behavior
may be restored only by removing saved entries from MMDevices. Or, of
course, by changing the reference strings.
In the beginning of 2000s, I was very impressed with the
reasonableness, harmony and logic of Kernel Streaming. By now KS has
become an ugly mess. :(
