Update on the new fire station:
We will be asking the townspeople to vote to take over the building at the
May 7th town meeting.
Up to this point the apparatus bay, which houses the six fire trucks is
complete.
It was built with energy efficiency in mind. It is extremely well insulated,
it has all LED lighting and has a new energy efficient heating system.
The reason we are turning over the building to the town before the addition
is complete is the association is almost out of funds. We started out with
about $115,00.00 and we are down to about $10,000.00. By turning the
building over to the town we will be able to use the $44,000.00 donation
from Vermont Yankee to the fire department for our time spent training for
the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant. At that it time it was turned over to the
emergency management director. It was decided way back then that the money
would be put aside to go toward the new fire station. We are only able to
acquire these funds if the building is turned over to the town. This amount
of money will help us to complete the addition this year.
The members of the department will still build this addition. They will be
paid their normal salary, out of the $44,000.00, although we have all stated
that we will be donating the pay back into the building fund. The
association will still be raising money to help with the cost. When we were
ready to start building we looked into a grant to build. The lowest price we
were quoted was 5 million dollars for the same building the town is getting
donated to them.
We had hoped to raise enough money to give you a completed building before
turning it over, unfortunately, it would take about another 6 or 7 years to
raise $44,000.00. The addition will allow us to have a communication room,
full bathroom with shower, training room, kitchen area and chief’s office.
Please keep in mind, when you vote, that there is not another town that has
worked so hard to give their town a building of this magnitude. I am very
proud of our department and I sincerely hope you are as well. If you have
questions before the meeting we would love to talk with you, in order to
help get through the town meeting at a reasonable hour. You can also call me
or talk to any fire officer as well.
