Dear Preston.

This is a vast question indeed. Let me start with what you are most interested in, soft synths.

I'm 55, and I started my career with analogue synthesisers and tape machines. I'm not nostalgic at all about these ancient devices, I mean For me these belong to the past, like harpsichords and so on. They have their charms of course, but technology evolves so Quickly, That todays synthesisers have much richer and more expressive sounds, this is my opinion anyway.

The bad side of it is their interface. Of course, these synths nowadays have many, many more parameters than their analogue ancestors. Which means, if you had to have as many buttons as parameters available, Each synth panel would be as big as Your rooms wall. This is impossible. They also became more complex to manipulate, to take another example, if you compare the first samplers with Kontakt, the number of parameters have drastically increased.

So, you have hardware controlers that can be hooked to your computer and your DAW, to control these, they have limited number of Switches knobs and sliders, that fortunately can be used for several parameters each, because you can have as many pages as you want, thus assigning the same Switches knobs and sliders to different parameters, one per page.

This of course takes a lot of time and requires sighted assistance.

From what I tried, the DAW that gives access to most virtual synths parameters is Samplitude on PC. You don't need a control surface for a start, as parameters appear on a list which is vocalised. You will of course have to use the jaws screenreader for this but you probably know about it.

Then, a hardware controller will always be more handy, as it will allow controlling parameters in real time whilst playing which is always more pleasant.

Please come back with more specific questions and we will try to help.

Best regards,

JPR

Hello,

I'm not exactly new to the world of production, but I have mostly been
trying to acquire knowledge on my own, and it hasn't gotten me to the
level where I had hoped to be. I am 22, and interested in learning
more about the technology that is available to me as an aspiring
producer. I would like to turn this passion into a career but in order
to do that I feel like I need to fill in the missing foundational
information that independence did not afford me. Basically I'm looking
for recommendations, on how and where to get started. What OS, What
DAW, What SOFTSYNTHS, What hardware, ETC... My greatest concern is
softsynths and the ability to manipulate them, if possible beyond just
the area of presets. I have a budget of between 5 and 10 thousand
dollars to get my studio off the ground if this will impact answers in
anyway. Like I said I do have some knowledge but I'm unsatisfied with
the results I've gotten from my uses of sonar, and the few VST's I've
purchased  (This could be due to a lack of proper training) and am
completely rebuilding from the ground up. So if you can, please help
me.
