Hi Joe,

Well here is my thinking on this for what its worth. I tend to favor a good
quality laptop.  Get plenty of the following;

*. 2 gigabytes of RAM, "random access memory".

*. A 100 gigabyte hard drive, "more is better but certainly not less".

*. Duel core processor, "this means that the laptop has two processors to
run all the applications and the windows operating system. One processor
runs the operating system while the other runs the applications". This makes
for faster computer and faster response times.
*. This is the one you need to think about. Windows Vista or should you
stick with windows XP. Its going to be hard to stick with windows XP in a
years time if that's when you are buying the piece as most retailers will
not want to sell you XP but Vista instead. Here is the angle on this
dilemma, you will need to upgrade to the very latest version of jaws, "jaws
8.1" as this is what is required for running on Vista systems. Also you
should consider purchasing a "SMA, "Service Maintenance agreement" this will
ensure that you get the newer jaws 9.0 coming out later on in the year. I
suggest this because right now jaws 8.1 while compatible with Vista isn't
exactly working with vista like a thing of beauty should be and quite
honestly is bad quality for the money they charge.
Remember also that you are into audio and video so high end graphics and
sound cards should be a consideration. All in all if you go for a good high
speck machine with the components I suggest above then you will find it
invaluable. The reason I caution against the pacmate is that it is a
proprietary piece and not easily maintained without having to send it
abroad and perhaps incurring high costs. Also it isn't as flexible as a
laptop so think about the laptop Joe.

Paul.

Subject: [vip_students] any suggestions

hello friends, i am an impulsive buyer, any new gadget that comes up, well,
i've got to have it, [whether i really need it or not] but i promise you,
and my pocket, that i am mending my ways, now here's the story, i need an
extra piece of equipment, for quite a lot of work that is to come up in the
next year, do i get a laptop? or a braillenote? or, a packmate? my current
leanings are towards the packmate, albeit it is somewhat expensive, is there
anyone on the list using the packmate, or the voice mate, any help will be
really appreciated i will be using the equipment mainly for writing and
accessing the internet, i am not rushing in to this, as i said iam mending
my foolish ways, take care, travel safely, joe and dillon.
